The shedding of a snake’s skin is nature’s way of demanding renewal—unyielding, untamed, and inevitable. This act of transformation, so intrinsic to its existence, mirrors the cycles of nature and the evolution of the self. To shed is to grow; to release is to become. This philosophy lies at the heart of everything we create, taking inspiration from the natural world and its sacred rhythms.
Serpentine wisdom: shedding, becoming, and beginning again
There’s something wild about the way a snake sheds its skin–it’s raw, messy, and necessary. Cleopatra the Alchemist believed in this kind of transformation: the kind that asks us to let go of what we no longer need to become something more. She chose the Ouroboros, a serpent devouring its own tail, as a symbol of this eternal cycle—reminding us that what feels like an ending is often just the beginning of something new. It’s a powerful idea, one that sits at the core of how we move through the world.
Snakes have always carried meaning far beyond their physical form. Silent, fluid, and enigmatic, they appear in myths and sacred stories across cultures. In Indian folklore, the Nagini—the divine serpent—represents life’s cycles, the balance between creation and destruction. From the infinite coils of Ananta, upon which Vishnu rests, to the fierce Naga kings who guard wisdom, snakes have long been seen as protectors of power and transformation.
For us at Aranyani, the Nagini has become a muse. She reminds us to honour the shifts that life brings. Nature doesn’t resist change—it moves with it, sheds what it no longer needs, and steps into the next season with grace. She reminds us that the natural world is not static, nor should we be.
Indian art has long paid tribute to the snake’s presence, capturing its mystery and duality—sacred yet earthly, feared yet revered. From ancient temple sculptures to intricate miniature paintings, from tribal motifs to architectural details on stepwells, the snake appears in countless forms, always hinting at the endless cycle of life, death, and regeneration.
There is no better moment to honor this symbol than now—2025 marks the Year of the Snake in the Chinese zodiac. In Chinese tradition, the snake represents wisdom, intuition, and the ability to navigate life’s changes. Much like in Indian mythology, it is a harbinger of transformation, urging us to trust in the cycles of renewal. This year, we welcome its energy wholeheartedly, allowing it to guide us in our journey of creation and evolution.
To embrace the snake is to embrace transformation. It’s a reminder that beauty isn’t found in holding on, but in the movement, the shedding, the becoming. Every ending carries the seed of something new, and within every moment of release, there is power waiting to rise.
THE SNAKE IS WILD, SACRED, INFINITE—AND IN ITS QUIET WISDOM, WE FIND OUR OWN PATH FORWARD.
